Last week I was honored to be the guest speaker at a Cloud Solution Architect Kick Off. The topic of my talk was “How to Build a Strong Team.” All of us, no matter what profession, rely on other people to do our jobs. Real estate agents rely on lawyers. Teachers rely on Principals. Nurses rely on doctors. Sales people rely on subject matter experts.
It was AWESOME! I provided a top ten list highlighting the key ideas to consider when building a stronger team. Getting to know each other’s motivations, hobbies, and style were included. Understanding communication preferences, coaching techniques, and proactive versus reactive responses were a few more suggestions.
However, after all of this fantastic content, the single biggest piece of positive feedback came from the BONUS which I included at the end of the top 10 list. That message was “Get Grateful.”
I spoke on how easy it is to complain about a coworker who didn’t do what you asked or perhaps made a mistake. It is easy to rant about compensation structures or lack of acknowledgement from management. But! At the end of the day, if you have a job, consider yourself lucky. If you aren’t allowing the negativity to act as a road block, you are likely doing well at your job and creating the means to support yourself, perhaps your family. What a blessing! Sure, it can be tough at times, many times but take a pause to say “I am grateful for this job.”
Gratitude is the #1 way to reverse the effects of negativity. Try it! Anytime you find yourself complaining, immediately find something you are truly grateful for, such as your dog, a good friend, or even running hot water. This practice instantly creates perspective and banishes small negative thoughts.
I loved hearing one person after the next say “The gratitude message really hit home for me because X.” All of the stories were incredible and it made ME grateful to have a group willing to take a step back realize how lucky we are.
Peace Love Sales,
Nadene
