Think about the BEST salespeople you know. Your barber, your barista, your butcher – all salespeople. (No, actually we don’t all wear pant suits and carry briefcases.) What makes these people SO friggin’ good? What are the commonalities among these peeps? That special unique something that keeps you coming back each week? I want to know!
When I think of these special salespeople, these fabulous rock stars that make me want to buy stuff just because they are being themselves, here are the top traits I noticed:
1. They Look Me in the Eye!
It’s the salespeople who are looking down at their computer, at the cash register, at their iPhone that I never remember. The salespeople who look me in the eye, ask me what I want, and then deliver make me feel more comfortable having a conversation and discussing my needs.
2. They Give Me Some Cheese
Along with eye contact, how about a SMILE! What a concept! If I get no eye contact and a smile, what’s the point? Look at me in eye and smile at me. That’s a great way to make a first impression. If you mess up after that, still smile 🙂
3. They are Accessible and Responsive
Accessible meaning their direct dial is listed in their email signature and it’s not a desk line, it’s mobile. Accessible meaning they make themselves available to you anytime you need something EVEN IF it’s not between the hours of 8am-5pm. It’s like, Whoa! I made the V.I.P. list! Responsive meaning they respond ASAP when you reach out. “Hey, got your email but I’m in a meeting. I will call you in 1 hour.” These peeps are reliable. Dig it.
4. Relationship Now, $$$ Later
It feels like these sales peeps are not concerned about their paycheck because they just know the $$$ will come. And it does. They focus on the relationship with customers, staying positive, and spreading good energy. These naturals are building a foundation for long-term customer relationships without even trying. You NEVER feel like you are getting sold into buying a used car.
5. CHILLLLLL
And this is the trait I could use the most work on- CHILL. All of the top sales people I know are relaxed and laid back. They do not freak out when a client can’t make a meeting or if the cash register stops working. The calm cats adapt to any curve ball and make themselves flexible for spontaneous lunch meetings, after work happy hours, or last minute trips.
Am I right? I want to know the traits I forgot about among the BEST freakin’ sales people you know. We all can learn a lesson from these folks to ultimately improve our sales.
