Leggings. Jeggings. Flip-flops. Low-rise pants. Sleeve-less shirts. Crew-neck t-shirts.
If you are guilty of sporting any of these clothing articles in your office, it’s time you revisit the definition of “Business Casual.”
Julie Watson, wardrobe consultant and personal shopper, visited my company to remind the tenured folks and inform the new hires about professionalism and the importance of image in the workplace.
The way we dress for work projects an image that could possibly open the door for new opportunities or act as the secret reason keeping you from getting ahead. Our goal is to get ahead no matter what so let’s make sure we are keeping it classy before we walk out the door by asking ourselves these 3 KEY Questions:
WOULD I FEEL COMFORTABLE MEETING WITH A CUSTOMER WEARING THIS?
DOES THIS OUTFIT SAY, “I AM READY FOR MY PROMOTION”?
WOULD MY BOSS WANT ME REPRESENTING OUR COMPANY IN THIS ATTIRE?
As someone who despises boring suits and thrives on new fashion, office-appropriate outfits are constantly on my mind to make sure my image is in check. Here is a FOTJ Tip to make sure you are relaying confidence, class, and professionalism:
If the CEO of my company were to step the elevator with me, would he be proud to have me on his team based off my outfit?
I certainly don’t want to disappoint that guy.
Bottom line: You are fresh on the job and at this point, first impression is all you got! Make the perception others have of you STRONG with these tips and tricks. Leave the rest behind. YOU get ahead.
