Karma & Carrot Cake

Karma – Ever experienced it?  That incredible feeling or absolutely pissed off feeling that occurs based on your previous actions.  I have a cool GOOD karma story for you…

Ironic shirt!

My Mom and I are sitting in Hugo’s Frog Bar in Chicago for dessert and martinis after a special dinner across the street at Le Colonial for French Vietnamese cuisine.  We are celebrating!  2 years ago to the day my Mom informed me she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  What a blessing it is 2 years later we are able celebrate the moment together celebrating life with breast cancer in the past.  So we did what anyone would do – we ordered the foot high carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and 2 martinis!

Our ginormous cake arrives and the pictures, stares, comments begin.  What?!  We are celebrating!  Jealous?  The couple next to us asks if they can take a picture of our cake and I tell them of course!  Hurry up and finish your dinner so you can enjoy some of our carrot cake.  There is no way we are finishing the cake.  We chat a bit, share the reason we are celebrating, and once they finish dinner, I send 2 fresh plates their way for dessert.

HUGE!

The couple is so touched by our gesture, they insist we come by their “shop” tomorrow.  What shop might that be, I ask.  The woman says, write this name down: “Charles Ifergan.”  What?  THIS is Charles Ifergan?  I had to been to one of his many fancy salons in the city but lo and behold, here I am sharing carrot cake with the internationally known stylist himself!  Charles and his wife insist we show up tomorrow and so, we did!

The salon is bustling with people when we arrived at 10:00am but the minute Charles was paged, he stopped everything when he knew his “carrot cake friends” had arrived.  Not only did Charles cut and blow our hair personally, he set us up with his best makeup artists who completed our entire look with incredible shadows, lipsticks, and a special “CC cream” only found at the Charles Ifergan salon.
While Charles was trimming my ends, I asked him if he believes in Karma.  Charles told me giving is at the foundation of his belief system and karma is one of his biggest values.  He gives not in hopes it will come back to him, but because it makes him feel good.
Charles told me about a time when he was asked to speak at a NYC conference about a new line of products and then the conference was cancelled on a days notice.  Even though the conference was not happening, Charles sent in pages of reviews he had taken over the past few weeks on the new products.  Sure, he could have charged for it but he wanted to give with no expectation.
The company was so taken aback by his gesture, they called him the following year and asked him to be the keynote speaker for a much larger audience.  That speech led to an opportunity for Charles to be featured on TV for the next 6 years and multiple other opportunities since.  All from one gesture.
Yes, Karma is real but even more, one must be AWAKE enough to send good Karma.  Karma is available to send and receive constantly but most times we are so caught up in ourselves we miss the opportunities.

When is the last time you acted out of goodness and love without future expectation?  What does that even look like for you?  Perhaps it means surprising a friend with flowers for no reason, helping a stranger in need, spending time with a peer at work who needs help.  No matter what it is, it must be done without expecting anything in return.  I tell you what, there is no better feeling.  Money cannot buy the feeling.  Trust the opportunities are out there.  You will know what to do 🙂
Peace, Love, & Carrot Cake,
Nadene
